How to choose LED Flood Lights for football fields ?
What do you call LED Flood Lights for football fields ?
Football fields are everywhere in our lives, so what do you call LED Flood Lights for football fields? First let me guess, football field lights?
In fact, these football field lights are floodlights. Why are they called floodlights? What is the best floodlight for a football field? Read on and find out, we’re here to break it down for you.
Most stadiums and indoor venues use high-intensity discharge (HID) lights for nearly all overhead lighting needs. On average, stadium lights have a much higher wattage than other outdoor lighting applications such as billboards, roads, and parking lots. While HID lights are very efficient, they take a lot of time to warm up and reach full brightness after going out.
In 2013, the Super Bowl was postponed due to partial lighting outages due to power outages. It didn’t take long for the lights to come back on, but they did take time to warm up to full brightness again. Why? Because the stadium uses HID lights, it takes a lot of time to warm up. The quick interruption of light caused the game to lag for a few minutes.
What is a floodlight? Why are they called floodlights?
Unique and professional design football field lights
Floodlights are a type of artificial light with a wide beam, and they are the most popular type of light used to illuminate large areas, especially outdoors.
You may have seen some kind of floodlights outdoors, for example, city street lights are also a type of floodlights. The reason floodlights are so popular is that they can generate a lot of light, and floodlights are not only used to provide better visibility for players, but also to benefit TV broadcasts. Great for illuminating large areas like stadiums.
1) Where floodlights are used
Floodlights are mainly used outdoors, such as football fields, soccer fields, but you will also see floodlights used in larger indoor venues, such as arenas. Floodlights come in a variety of sizes, from a few watts to several kilowatts. Some of the areas where floodlights are used are:
- Gym
- Football field
- Sports fields
- Street
- Lane
- PARKING LOT
- Indoor and outdoor arenas
- Storehouse
- Mine
- Airport/Seaport
- Many other large areas
2) What is the difference between spotlights and floodlights?
The closest thing to a floodlight is a spotlight. Both spotlights and floodlights can be used indoors and outdoors.
Spotlights cast a narrow beam of light, usually no more than 45 degrees, and they are usually designed for small areas or points, such as display objects, wall art, landscape features, or architectural details in one direction.
Floodlights have a beam spread of up to 120 degrees. It can illuminate larger spaces with the same wattage and lumen output as a spotlight. So it’s popular for football and stadiums.
If you find it difficult to remember the difference between spotlights and floodlights, keep this in mind: Spotlights illuminate a specific place, while floodlights illuminate an area.
3) Why did metal halide switch to LED Flood Lights?
There are two types of football field floodlights – metal halide and LED Flood Lights. With the development of high-power LED Flood Lights, more and more people use LED Flood Lights to replace MH lights, why is this?
Low calorific value: High-quality LED Flood Lights has good heat dissipation design, fast heat dissipation, and the temperature is <75 °C, ensuring a longer service life of the lamp. And MH lamp>100℃.
Energy saving: 1000W LED Flood Lights can directly replace 2000W MH lights, brighter. It is at least 88% more energy efficient than MH lamps on an entire stadium basis and also saves additional energy consumption costs.
High color rendering index: The higher the color rendering index, the more realistic the lighting effect will be under high-definition TV broadcasting. LED floodlights for football fields are CRI80+, 90+, while metal halides are around CRI 40.
Best Lighting Control: LED Flood Lights are flicker free and light pollution free. No complaints from neighbors.
Instant-on:LED Flood Lights turn on instantly with no warm-up time, while metal halides require at least 15 minutes of warm-up time to operate.
Environmentally friendly: LED Flood Lights do not contain any toxic waste and leave no carbon footprint.
Dimmable system: LED Flood Lights can use dimmable systems, including 0-10V, 1-10V, Dali, DMX, you can adjust the brightness according to your needs.
Lowest running cost: LED Flood Lights is a one-time investment, high-quality LED has a long service life, no replacement and maintenance are required, and the running cost can be reduced by 90% compared with MH lights.
Reliable Warranty: LED stadium lights have a 5-10 year warranty, which is more reliable than 2-3 years for MH lights.
How to choose the right LED Flood Lights for football fields?
1) High quality LED chip
Bridgelux, lumileds, etc. are the leading brands of LED chips. MEAN WELL and Inventronics are the top brands of LED drivers in the industry. We should choose lamps with reliable raw materials.
2) High luminous efficiency
This determines the energy saving range of your LED floodlights. “Lumens per watt” is a unit that expresses energy efficiency. For example, an LED with 150 lumens per watt means 1W of power produces 150 units of light and brightness. So you will know that a 150 lm/W lamp is more energy efficient than a 120 lm/W lamp.
3) Good heat dissipation
Good heat dissipation avoids damage to LED floodlights due to overheating. A good heatsink is made of pure aluminum and has a high thermal conductivity of 238 W/mk – the higher the value, the higher the thermal conductivity. Die cast iron is only 54.4W/mk.
High-power LED floodlights with a temperature of <75°C are better, which can ensure a longer service life. Warning if temperature >100°C.
4) Waterproof outdoor floodlight
For outdoor football fields, we need at least IP65 waterproof lights, the higher the better. If used underwater, IP68 is required.
5) Color Rendering Index (CRI)
This is an index that shows you how true the color will be illuminated. In football field lighting, CRI 80 is required. Sometimes, we need the CRI90+ for filming, ary galleries.
6) Glare rate (light leakage)
This is the key factor affecting the LED football flight lighting. Excessive glare or light leakage can affect the eyes of players and spectators, as well as reduce the brightness of the target area. Choose lamps with advanced optical designs with low glare.
7) Flickering problem
Shooting a football game affects the camera, especially in slow motion. The flicker rate must be zero.
