2023 Football Stadium Lights Buyer’s Guide

What are the best stadium lights? Why are LED replacements for metal halide, halogen, HPS and mercury lamps? What factors should be considered before buying football field lights? This article will briefly describe how to use LEDs to light up outdoor stadiums with FIFA World Cup, Olympic, Premier League and UEFA standards.

It is exciting to start preparing documents and products for lighting tenders. To increase our chances of success, the first tip we need to consider is the lighting fixture requirements, including lux (brightness) and uniformity.

There are many regulations regarding stadium lighting. According to UEFA’s lighting guide, there are six types of football pitches. Europa League Final Elite A, Super Cup Final A, Semi-Final B, Qualifier C, etc. Lighting standards have increased with the importance and popularity of the competition, saying we have the highest standards for the finals.

1. The brightness of the football field

Lighting is divided into two parts: horizontal brightness and vertical brightness. Horizontal is for lights covering the pitch, while vertical is for player portraits. The document states that the lighting of the stadium should be 2000 lux horizontally and 1500 lux vertically. For this setup, we will need hundreds of sets of high-power LED floodlights.

2. Light uniformity

UEFA also requires pitch lighting to have a uniformity of 0.5 to 0.7. Based on a scale of 0 to 1, this parameter indicates how evenly distributed the brightness is. This is an important consideration, as uneven lighting can irritate the eyes of players and spectators. In fact, it is not easy to achieve high uniformity, because we can imagine the light spot to be circular (or usually rectangular), with overlapping and non-overlapping areas. One of the techniques we employ is to use LED lights with smaller beam angles and lower power. Asymmetrical designs can improve lighting distribution. We provide LED lights for international events such as Premier League and Olympic Games.

3. TV Broadcast Compatibility

Now is the new era of 4K TV broadcasting. Uniform and high-quality vertical brightness on LED floodlights enables high standard photo and video capture production. Therefore, we also put a lot of effort into reducing the glare of the lamps. The anti-glare optics in our LED lights don’t give players and spectators a flickering and harsh feeling. This technology is achieved through special lens caps and coatings that suppress unwanted glare while maintaining brightness.

4. Stadium Roof Height

Lamp heights are generally within 30-50 meters; therefore, we need high-quality LED lighting without much loss of brightness. In fact, with today’s technology, loss of light is sometimes unavoidable because, no matter how precise your photometric design, not all 100% of the beam is projected onto the football field. Instead, part of the lumen (approximately 30%) spread around. To solve this problem, we have two methods.

5. Required LED light power

Get a quick overview of the total power required for football field lights. We can do the following calculations. Take a traditional 105m*68m football field as an example. A lawn of 7140 square meters requires 7140 * 2000 lux = 14,280,000 lumens. What does it mean? Since our stadium floodlight has a luminous efficiency of 140 lm/W, the minimum wattage of the LED should be 14,280,000 / 140 = 102,000 watts. This is the theoretical minimum we need, as we also need to account for light loss and luminaire height, as described above. Before doing the computer lighting simulation, we will know that the power required is about 150,000 watts. Isn’t it incredible?

At this point you might ask, what would happen to me if I were lighting up football fields with metal halide lamps now? The answer is to double the power needed! Since the lighting efficiency of metal halides is about 70 lm/W, the required power is about 300,000 watts. Therefore, replacing stadium lights with metal halides can save a lot of energy and therefore electricity bills.

6. Stadium light pollution problem

The lighting on the top of the stadium shall not cause light pollution. Due to light leakage, the adjacent residential areas are seriously affected. In 2017, there was a repeat of this issue in Michigan, USA. Detroit’s NFL stadium uses very high-power lighting. However, there is considerable light scattering outside the venue. Some even complained that when the house was 5km away from the playing field, the light was so harsh that it greatly affected sleep. The safety of road users is also negatively affected.

In fact, the brightness of the ground around the arena should not exceed 25 to 30 lux. It has become one of the lighting requirements.

Metal Halide Alternatives for led Stadium Lights

About 45% of soccer fields in the U.S. still use traditional light sources such as metal halide, HPS, and HID lamps. Although the efficiency of MH lamps is increasing, they are still significantly lower than LED lamps. Today, the efficiency of LEDs has increased to 140 lm/W, while the MH is about 75 lm/W. In addition to lights for new stadiums, we also supply high quality LED, metal halide lamps for replacement of football stadium lights.

7. Long lifespan hours

With the metal halide retrofit of the LED lamps, the lifespan of the lamps has been greatly increased to 80,000 hours. If you turn on the lights for 8 hours a day, our products can last at least 25 years without significantly reducing brightness. LED is also considered a durable lamp due to its solid state nature. Our retrofit lighting products do not contain precision components such as surface soldering and gold wire.

8. Good heat dissipation system

Another reason for the high durability is that our football field LED lights have a very good cooling system. In fact, if heat keeps accumulating around the LED chip, the brightness and lifespan will be reduced; therefore, we also put the most emphasis on improving the heat sink to reduce the junction temperature of the lamp for long-term operation. Typically, it is achieved by large, circularly arranged aluminum elongated fins containing a large surface area.

9. Durability of floodlights

With the replacement of stadium lighting with metal halides, we can provide luminaires with stronger materials. This is because our LED lights are made of polycarbonate and high-quality aluminum alloy. The material is corrosion-resistant, so it is less likely to be damaged during normal use. Also, our products have IP66 waterproof certification. It can withstand heavy rain and general water splashes.

10. Warranty

In our experience, LED companies usually offer 3 to 5 year warranties. If you have any questions about our led stadium lights during gurantee time, welcome to keep us posted, thank you.
