LED work light sources advantages and characteristics:

  1. the characteristics of LED light source
  2. Voltage: LED uses low voltage power supply, power supply voltage between 6-24V, varies according to different products, so it is a safer power supply than the use of high voltage power supply, especially suitable for public places.
  3. Efficiency: 80% less energy consumption than incandescent lamps with the same light efficiency
  4. Applicability: Small, each unit LED chip is 3-5mm square, so it can be prepared into various shapes of devices, and suitable for changeable environment
  5. Stability: 100,000 hours, light decline is 50% of the initial
  6. Response time: the response time of its incandescent lamp is millisecond level, and that of LED lamp is nanosecond level
  7. Environmental pollution: no harmful metal mercury
  8. Color: change the current can change color, led easily through chemical modification method, adjust the band structure and band gap of the material, to achieve red, yellow, green, blue, orange multi-color light. For example, when the low current is red LED, with the increase of current, can turn orange, yellow, and finally green
  9. Price: LEDS are expensive. Compared with incandescent lamps, several leds can cost as much as one incandescent lamp, and usually 300 to 500 diodes are required for each set of lights

Three, the type of monochromatic light LED and its development history

The earliest LED light source made of semiconductor P-N junction luminescence principle came out in the early 1960s.The material used at that time was GaAsP, which emits red light (λ P =650nm), with a luminous flux of only a few thousandths of a lumen at a driving current of 20 mA, and a corresponding luminous efficiency of about 0.1 lumens/watt.

In the mid-1970s, elements In and N were introduced to make LEDS produce green light (λp=555nm), yellow light (λp=590nm) and orange light (λp=610nm), and the light efficiency was also improved to 1 lumen/watt.

By the early 1980s, GaAlAs LED light sources were available, allowing red leds to achieve an efficiency of 10 lumens per watt.

In the early 1990s, two new materials, GaAlInP with red and yellow light and GaInN with green and blue light, were successfully developed, which greatly improved the light efficiency of LED.In 2000, the former LED had an efficiency of 100 lumens per watt in the red and orange regions (λp=615nm), while the latter LED had an efficiency of 50 lumens per watt in the green regions (λp=530nm).

Four, the application of monochromatic light LED

At first, LED was used as the indicator light source of instruments. Later, LED of various light colors was widely used in traffic signal lights and large-area display screens, which produced good economic and social benefits. The 12-inch red traffic light, for example, is a long-lived, low-efficiency 140-watt incandescent that produces 2,000 lumens of white light. After passing through a red filter, the light is lost by 90%, leaving only 200 lumens of red light. In its new design, Lumileds uses 18 red LED lights that, including circuit losses, consume 14 watts of power to produce the same effect.

Automobile signal lamp is also an important field of LED light source application. In 1987, China began to install high brake lights on cars. Due to the fast response speed (nanosecond level) of LED, it can let the driver who follows the vehicle know the driving situation as soon as possible and reduce the occurrence of car rear-end accidents.

In addition, LED lights have been applied in outdoor red, green, blue full-color display, key button type mini flashlight and other fields.

Five, Development of white LED

To general illume character, people needs white illuminant more.In 1998, LED emitting white light was successfully developed. This LED is made of GaN chip and yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) package together. The GaN chip emits blue light (λp=465nm, Wd=30nm), and the YAG phosphor containing Ce3+ produced by high temperature sintering emits yellow light emission after excited by this blue light, with a peak value of 550nm.The blue LED substrate is installed in a bowl-shaped reflecting chamber and covered with a thin layer of resin mixed with YAG, approximately 200-500nm.Part of the blue light emitted by the LED substrate is absorbed by the phosphor, and part of the blue light is mixed with the yellow light emitted by the phosphor to produce white light. Now, for InGaN/YAG white LED, by changing the chemical composition of YAG phosphor and adjusting the thickness of the phosphor layer, we can obtain a color of 3500-10000K white light.

What’s Features need to Look For the temporary work light?

Brightness & Adjustability

If you need a light source that provides different brightness levels look for work lights that have selectable lumen output settings.  For example a light may feature two different lumen output settings like 800 lumen or 1000 lumen.

Because LED brightness can be adjusted look for work lights that have a wide range of brightness settings i.e. 2000 lumen to 10,000 lumen.  This way the light can be set for the proper amount of brightness needed depending on the work environment.

Power Source – Corded or Cordless

LEDs can work on both AC and DC power.  As a result, many LED work lights are cordless and use a rechargeable battery for the power supply. Cordless LED lights are generally smaller, lighter and easy to transport.

Look for rechargeable LED work lights that use a Lithium Polymer Ion battery (Li-Poly) versus a Lithium Ion battery (Li-Ion). Li-Poly Ion batteries will provide a longer battery life and are comparatively much safer than a Li-Ion battery.

Some LED work lights offer both a corded AC power option and a rechargeable option. These options are usually found on LEDs with higher lumen output (8,000 +) and provide a continuous power but still offers the flexibility of a portable light when no AC source is available.

Waterproof, Water-resistant and Dustproof (IP Rating)

When choosing an LED work light consider the environment in which it will be used.  Dust and water are the two elements that typically cause damage to electrical equipment so look for lights that are waterproof, water-resistant and dustproof.   Waterproof and dustproof don’t always mean the same thing for all devices.  Look for the light’s Ingress Protection Rating commonly referred to as an IP rating.  For example a LED work light with an IP67 rating means it is fully protected from dust and can also withstand being submerged in about 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.  Whereas a light with an IP65 rating means it is protected from dust and against low pressure spray like from a nozzle.

Other Features and Options

Consider other features and functions that are available when choosing a work light.

Magnetic Base – is an alternative option that a mechanic may find useful so the light can be attached to the frame of the car or under the hood.

Power Bank – gives the user the option to charge other devices like a cell phone.

Bluetooth Speakers – are now an option with some work lights allowing the user to stream music along with illuminating the work area.

Tripods & Stands – are accessories that will allow work lights to be mounted at different heights giving the ability to illuminate a larger area.

Battery Level Indicator – this is a feature that shows the charge level of the battery.
