What is the best stadium light? Why do metal halide lamps, halogen lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps and mercury lamps need to be replaced with LEDs? What are the factors to consider when buying lights for football field?

It is exciting to start preparing documents and products for the lighting tender. In order to increase the chance of success, the first reminder we need to consider is the requirements of the lighting equipment, including lux (brightness) and uniformity.

1. The brightness of the football field
The lighting is divided into two parts: horizontal brightness and vertical brightness. The horizontal direction is the light covering the entire court, and the vertical direction is the portrait of the player. The document stipulates that the lighting level of the stadium should be 2000 lux, and the vertical should be 1500 lux. For this setup, we will need hundreds of sets of high-power LED floodlights.

2. Illumination uniformity
UEFA also requires stadium lighting to have a uniformity of 0.5 to 0.7. This parameter is based on a ratio of 0 to 1 and indicates the degree to which the brightness is evenly distributed. This is an important consideration because uneven light can irritate the eyes of players and spectators. In fact, it is not an easy task to achieve high uniformity, because we can imagine that the light spot is circular (or often rectangular), with overlapping and non-overlapping areas. One of the technologies we use is to use LED lights with a smaller beam angle and lower power. Asymmetrical design can improve lighting distribution. 3. TV broadcast compatibility
This is a new era of 4K TV broadcasting. The uniform and high-quality vertical brightness on the LED floodlight can achieve high standard photo and video production. Therefore, we also strive to reduce the glare of the lamps. The anti-glare optics in our LED lights will not give players and spectators flicker and glare. This technology is achieved through a special lens cover and coating, which can suppress unwanted glare while maintaining brightness.

4. Stadium roof height
The height of the lamp is generally within 30-50 meters; therefore, we need good LED lighting without much loss of brightness. In fact, with today’s technology, light loss is sometimes inevitable, because no matter how precise your photometric design is, not all light beams are 100% projected onto the football field. On the contrary, part of the lumen (about 30%) is scattered around. In order to solve this problem, we have two methods.

a) Use better optics

With high-quality LED chips and lens caps, the beam is more concentrated, reducing brightness loss; however, the limitation is that we cannot use these lights on the entire football field because the uniformity will be reduced-imagine there are countless circular spots on the ground. b) Increase the number of lamps used
Installing more floodlights on the ceiling of the stadium to prevent lumen decay is a relatively passive way. For example, if the theoretical (calculated) value is 10,000 watts, we will eventually need at least 12,000 to 13,000 watts to get the best results.

5. Required LED light power
Quickly understand the total power required by the football field lights. We can perform the following calculations. Take the traditional 105m*68m football field as an example. A lawn of 7140 square meters requires 7140 * 2000 Lux = 14,280,000 lumens. What does it mean? Since the luminous efficiency of our stadium floodlight is 140 lm/W, the minimum wattage of the LED should be 14,280,000 / 140 = 102,000 watts. This is the theoretical minimum we need, because we also need to consider the light loss and the height of the luminaire mentioned above. Before the computer lighting simulation, we will know that the required power is about 150,000 watts.

Having said that, you may ask, what will happen if I use metal halide lamps to illuminate the football field? This answer is to double the power required! Since the luminous efficiency of metal halides is about 70 lm/W, the required power is about 300,000 watts. Therefore, replacing stadium lights with metal halides can save a lot of energy, thereby saving electricity bills.

6. Light pollution in stadiums
The top lighting of the stadium must not cause light pollution. Due to light leakage, neighboring residential areas were seriously affected. In 2017, there were repeated incidents related to this issue in Michigan, the United States. The NFL stadium in Detroit uses very high power lighting. However, there is considerable light scattering outside the venue. Some people even complained that when the house is 5 kilometers away from the competition venue, the lights are very exciting and seriously affect sleep. The safety of road users is also negatively affected.

In fact, the brightness of the ground around the arena should not exceed 25 to 30 lux. It has become one of the lighting requirements.

About 45% of football stadiums in the United States still use traditional light sources, such as metal halide, HPS and HID lights. Although the efficiency of MH lamps has been improved from time to time, it is still significantly inferior to LED lamps. Today, the efficiency of LEDs has increased to 140 lm/W, while MH is about 75 lm/W. 7. Longer service life
By transforming metal halides into LED lamps, the service life of the lamps has been greatly increased to 80,000 hours. 8. Good heat dissipation system

In fact, if heat continues to accumulate around the LED chip, it will reduce brightness and life; therefore, we also attach great importance to improving the heat sink to reduce the junction temperature of the lamp to achieve long-term operation. Usually, it is achieved by aluminum extension fins that contain large circular arrays with large surface areas.

9. Durability of floodlights
